Rainbow Chard Seeds (Beta Vulrgaris Subsp.)

Approximately 60 seeds per packet (1g)

Hardy Biennial

When to sow indoors:

February to April

When to sow outdoors:

March to July

Harvest:

May to November

Sowing and growing:

Direct sow outdoors in full sun for best results. Sow into rich, moisture-retentive, free-draining soil. Direct sow seeds 2.5cm (1 inch) deep and 10cm (4 inches) apart, in rows spaced 45cm (18 inches) apart. Alternatively, sow in modules or trays and plant outdoors when large enough to handle. Water well to avoid bitterness. Keep weed free by regularly weeding or covering a layer of mulch around the base of the plant, as this will also help to retain moisture during dry spells. Young leaves can be picked from 5cm (inch) and onwards. For mature leaves, allow these to grow as large as you wish but before they begin to wilt.

Advice:

Rainbow Chard can be overwintered, so from October and onwards, be sure to cover with cloches or fleece to avoid frost damage. Consider also covering the crown of the plant with straw for extra frost protection. Seeds will keep until the following year if stored correctly, however the germination rate may fall. We always recommend that our customers seed save wherever possible.
